Running Update...Am I too old for this?

I was never an athletic person and I was never able to stick to a regular exercise routine.  I was always in awe by those who could regularly stick to an activity they enjoyed.  For one, I was too embarrased by my weight to really be involved in any public displays of activity.  For me to participate in a team sport would have been mortifying.  Would I be fast enough, would I be good enough, I don't want to do something wrong?  I am sure many of you know how it feels.

In late 2011, I decided to push myself with walking.  My dear hubby used to make me go out for walks with him before that.  I would go but the complaints from me would start, like its too hot, its too cold, my legs are sore, I'm tired and I'm too heavy!

A funny thing happened when I started losing weight, I started getting more energy and the shorter walks turned into longer ones and then amazingly I started doing short spurts of running.  In 2012, I completed a 5K run and 10K run.    When I was training for these my eating was much better and I felt much better.  I still wonder am I too old to push myself with this, but I have to keep moving and I actually enjoy doing this.

Even though I didn't think I still had it in me, I have signed up for:

Around the Bay 5K run on March 24, 2013
Valeant Pharmaceuticals 10K run on May 4, 2013

I am nowhere near the level I was last year.  I don't expect to have any great times, but I just want the challenge again (even though I didn't think I would ever do a 10K again).  Heck, I just want to finish and I love getting the medals about as much as I love getting those darn stickers at Weight Watchers!

If only the weather will cooperate, I can get off this darn treadmill and get back outside.  I can't complain too much, this morning I managed to do 3 one minute runs at 6 mph on the treadmill.  I would never have tried this outside.

Brrr...at least the icewine producers can pick their grapes now

  1. I see some REALLY OLD PEOPLE at races, so no, you're not too old for this, not by a long shot! I think with racing, though, it's OK to just run the race and have fun - not every race needs to be a new PR.
